Audio Story

2-25-22

Introduction:

For my my audio story, I started off by asking three people on the street what they thought the most beautiful thing in the world is. The first few answers I got were things like love, nature and words. Through one of my expert interviews, violin player Nicole she took a different approach to this question through her years of playing the violin. Professor Williams was my second expert and she elaborated on her love for music sharing with us what her favorite type of music genre is. She is also well educated in the music field as she has grown up with her parents being very involved in this art form as well.

Watching these videos was extremely eye opening and defiantly made me stop to think. One of the largest takeaways that I had while watching the videos is that what ever you post online never really goes away. I like the analogy that they made in the first Ted Talk about about information on the internet being like a tattoo that is on your body forever. The second something is posted, it never really goes away. All of this  information is stored forever even if you "delete it".

Something else that really stood out to me was all the facial recognition that computers can collect on a person through many photos and videos. Before Ted Talk, I was unaware that this type of artificial intelligence and technology actually existed. It is a little unsettling how photos or videos are taken of you multiple times a day when you do not even realize. This type of information makes you stop and think and leaves you with an uneasy feeling that you are always being watched. Regardless of where you are, computers are constantly collecting data about you.

The automatic license plate reader is also something that I did not know existed. These license plate readers are everywhere and are contently keeping track of you and wherever you go. They can be mounted on traffic lights, police cars, etc. Just from this information they can know a lot about a person just from where they go on the daily. I think the government should not be so invasive on everyones privacy and daily life. I think they should have more rules and regulations put in place that they along with other companies have that can regulate the information that they know about. To protect ourselves from this, we can be careful by the amount of information that we share with companies. even something as simple as creating a gmail account, be careful the amount of information that you share with them.

 Technology

One form of technology that I learned from someone else is Adobe Photoshop. Right now I am taking the class Graphic Software Packages and before this class, honestly I did not know that it was a thing. I knew that there were different technologies that allowed people to edit and photoshop photos but I did not know that this was specifically an Adobe system. Currently I am learning the technology Adobe and editing photos along with creating different graphics. When I first walked into this class, I did not really know what to expect. I thought that maybe we would be learning how to use computer software but I did not know that this would specifically be Adobe. Learning this new technology program is both a lot of fun but a huge challenge. This type of technology is very foreign to me and I do not think all the tools are very self explanatory. There is so many things that you can do to a photo or graphic on this program but a lot of the tools are hidden and the commands are hard to get to. Once you figure out how to work this program however, I feel that it could be very powerful. Through Adobe Photoshop, you can really change any part of an image. Through this class, I learned how to completely remove an object from a photo and make it look like nothing was ever there. The technology that this software has is amazing because after removing an entire element to the photo, the computer fills in the space with something that blends in with the background. Without taking this class at HPU, I would never have been exposed to this new technology Adobe Photoshop.

Reminder Paragraph

My podcast is an interview with my Human Communications Professor Holly Williams. She has a passion for music and in this podcast she is contemplating whether she should go to a concert this weekend in Charlotte NC. She discusses all the pros and cons to going to the concert in this clip.

I've learned a lot from this topic after this podcast because I don't know much about music. After hearing what Professor Williams had to say I have spent more time researching different types of music like rock music and I have found I actually enjoy it. Soft rock is never something I thought I would enjoy and I have been expanding my music taste ever since.

Some things that have helped me a lot with making this audio clip is the razor tool. Without using the razor tool, I would never be able to complete this assignment and put different audio clips together. This page on Adobe.com has been particularly helpful showing me how to work with the razor tool and multitrack clips.

On both the websites of The American Conservative and Antiwar,  the authors of these websites have very strong voices that are all for the idea of Antiwar. Antiwar voices are something that you will never hear on the main stream media for variety of reasons. The media clearly does not want this information being spread. The government and media do not want this information to be spread because it has a very heavy one side bias. I feel that this bias goes against their agenda.

After more research though 24/7 Wallst.com there is actually a lot of money to be made in war. Although there is a lot of money lost though equipment, labor, repairs etc, believe it or not, a lot of companies actually profit off of war. According to 24/ Wallst.com said that the US company Textron made approximately $14.2 billion dollars in total sales. They also made a total profit of $1.2 billion. There are many more examples of companies profiting billions of dollars off of war like Leidos, Rolls- Royce, Raytheon and Boing. The US is also the worlds largest defense spender and I think they probably do not want the American people knowing how much money they actually spend on war. In life, a lot of motivation to do certain things is about the money and power. War is no exception to that even though it is putting others at risk. The main stream media only puts things out there that they want people to know and the idea of Antiwar isn't one of them.

Expert Interview Blog 2

Who The Expert Is

The Expert that I choose to interview for blog post #2 is my professor Holly Williams. She is a professor in the school of communications and I take the class "Human Communication" with her. I feel that she is an expert because she use to be on the radio talking about various topics. She is very passionate about music. In her interview she is contemplating whether she wants to attend this concert in Charlotte.

Something Technical

In this weeks blog, I used a lot of editing skills that I have learned from week one. One skill that I learned that I use before can even start to edit is how to import an audio file from your computer and browse media. I learned how to do this on Adobe.com

Without learning how to do this, I would be unable to edit any form of audio file. I also used any other techniques from Adobe.com like how to edit with a multitrack, which I could very useful with putting my audio together for this assignment.

Radio Lab Arc

I think my audio will follow the Radio Lab Arc because music is a universal language. Regardless of where you are from or what you speak, everyone can understand the value of music and connect to it. My post will include all different parts of the lab like getting to know the topic better and investigating other peoples thoughts and opinions.

 The Printing Press

The Printing press is arguable one of the most important and impactful inventions ever invented. Because of the printing press communication and the away information is passed has changes for the better. Not only did this invention make it easier to print things, as a result people had a lot more access to books because they were so much more affordable. As a result of this, people learned how to read and became a lot more educated. Before this point, books were very expensive and could only be afforded by the rich. As a result, no one other than the rich could read or write. This created a very big gap between the rich and the poor as they literally could no communicate with one anther. Also only people that were in power and had a say in the government were the people that had money because by default these were the only people that could read.

According to History.com the Printing Press is "a device that allows for mass production of uniform printed matter mainly in the form of books, pamphlets, and newspapers". This press was actually created in China and then eventually remolded by Johannas Guternburg in Europe in 1450. The circumstances of this invention were pretty good. It was during the time of the Renaissance where there was a lot of growth and changed how life was lived from that point on. Some words that are pretty similar to the Renaissance are the awaking, renewal and, reconstruction.  As stated by Merriam-Webster the Renaissance was one of the most important times for growth in history and is defined as"the period of European History between the 14th and 17th centuries when there was a new interest in science and in ancient art and literature especially in Italy". This time period can be seen as a rebirth of mankind and of life as the way that we once knew it. Really after this period of time people began think more critically.

The very first printing press was actually made in China by Wang Chen. This printing press did not save that much time because everything that was being printed was carved out of wood. I think it is a really good idea but in the event you make a mistake carving, the entire print would be reined. Also I can imaging that the wood would not last very long and would disintegrate as it is being used making the print blurry and hard to read. About 150 years later, Gutenburg created the printing press that we know today out of metal with interchangeable metal blocks. This is a great idea because he would carve out specific letters and words and those could be interchanged in any order to say anything that they wanted t to say. This was defiantly a huge time saver because you did not have to carve out something new every time you wanted to write a new word. Also I imaging that the carvings lasted a lot longer as they were made out of medal as opposed to wood.

One of the most significant things made on the printing press was 200 copies of what is knows as the Gutenburg Bible. Historyguide.org says that the after this the invention spread rapidly to 2500 different European cities. Overall this invention was a very positive thing. However one negative effect the printing press had is that at one point they used very toxic ink that was harmful to breath in. With this aside, the printing press changed life as we know it for the better in many ways.

Experiences That Shape US

My name is Julia Segalla. I am from Boston Massachusetts. I have lived in Boston my entire life until I moved down South for college. Moving from the North to the South was definitely a big adjustment, however I am very happy with the decision I made. Coming to school in the south made me realize that I want to move in the future and experience other places other than the Northeast.

Currently I am a junior at High Point University. At HPU, I am studying Strategic Communication, Marketing and Sales. Within these majors, I really enjoy the fact that they are very collaborative and you get to work a lot with others. In the future I really hope to hold a position where I get to work with others because I really enjoy a collaborative environment. Right now, I hold a position with High Point University's office of undergraduate admissions as an HPU ambassador and campus tour guide. I also on occasion work as a receptionist and delivery manager through High Point University's Campus Concierge. From having these working experiences through the school, it has definitely taught me how to effectively communicate with others.

Also at HPU, I am an active member of the High Point University Dance Team. Dance is something that I have been passionate about my entire life. I love that I get to continue this through my college experience. Being a member of this team plays a huge role in my life. It has definitely shaped my college experience to the way it is today. Because of the dance team, I have made some of my best college friends. I firmly believe if I never met these people my entire HPU experience would be completely different. Being a part of this team keeps me busy and definitely fills up my schedule after class with practices and games. On the team, I hold a leadership position where I am in charge of the team's image and creating sponsorships for the team.

On campus, I am also involved in Greek life as a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Kappa Delta has also given me my absolute best friends and completely transformed my experience at High Point for the better. Again, Kappa Delta has made me realize that I love interacting, communicating, and helping others solve problems. Through all the things I am involved in at HPU they have really shaped my experience and made me realize that I would like a job where I get to work with others in the future.
